e-flux journal, Issue no. 22 — “Idiot Wind: On the Rise of Right-Wing Populism in the US and Europe, and What It Means for Contemporary Art”

Guest-edited by Paul Chan and Sven Lütticken January/February 2011 Available online: e-flux.com/journal

“When Paul Chan and Sven Lütticken proposed to gather a series of “reports” on the (mostly) recent rise of right-wing, populist movements for e-flux journal, it was immediately apparent that the urgency and complexity of the topic required its own special issue. As protests erupt throughout Europe in opposition to austerity measures being pushed through by right-wing governments and EU fiscal bodies, we are also now witnessing a phenomenon spreading throughout the Northern Hemisphere in which some of the most brazen hardline racist rhetoric emerges not only from politicians, but from the general populace as well. What is going on? It is our pleasure to present Chan and Lütticken’s “Idiot Wind” as the January/February 2011 issue of e-flux journal.” —Julieta Aranda, Brian Kuan Wood, Anton Vidokle

e-flux journal, Issue #19 October 2010 e-flux.com/journal benne: In “Marx After Duchamp, or The Artist’s Two Bodies,” Boris Groys begins with Duchamp’s readymade as the thing that liberated the artist from the manual labor of producing art objects by hand. However, it seems that the artist liberated from having to produce objects is now placed in the position of having to maintain entire museums to present his or her non-objects. And it should come as no surprise that the shift in the location of work away from the handmade object to, say, pure idea, has paralleled the proletarization and exploitation of intellectual and artistic labor—with or without objects or bodies. (see full essay here)

tiny noise http://tinynoise.tk/

tiny noise is a nomadic, open concept, audio art platform conceived by Toni [skopje] and Kyd [montreal] in february 2005. it started spontaneously as a d.i.y. experiment in forming an independent network by using global communication tools, personal contacts and experiences. the idea of tiny noise is to make a group activity out of sharing and exploring experimental, provocative and adventurous music and sound projects. tiny noise remains open to many sound/music forms, especially those enriched by other medias and looks to collaborate with other open projects. itt: How can the multitude constitute a singularity, asks Antonio Negri in Hans Ulrich Obrist’s conversation with the philosopher. How can the wild, dangerous creativity that exists in the metropolis be harnessed to mobilize people? How does “all that rationalist art” represent the link between Surrealism and Fordization? And how can we rediscover the common as a space of resistance? (see full essay here)

IOCOSE www.iocose.org

IOCOSE has been working in Italy and Europe since 2006. It organises actions in order to subvert ideologies, practices and processes of identification and production of meanings. It uses pranks and hoaxes as tactical means, as joyful and sound tools. IOCOSE thinks about the streets, Internet and word of mouth as a battlefield. Tactics such as mimesis and trickery are used to lead and delude the audience into a semantic pitfall. “Mystery Activist Video HTTP Gallery, London Open 05 -14 November 2010”
